Love Binds All Virtues In Perfect Unity

Colossians 3:12-14:

12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Thoughts:

The Apostle Paul here mentions something interesting. Something that I have not seen in other parts of the Bible, that I have read, that the virtues that God wants us to have and hold are held together by love. I think that this verse is telling us that above all the virtues that we have, we should have love. Love is what is most important because without it, the rest of the virtues are worthless. What is compassion if not driven with love? What is kindness without love? What is humility, gentleness and patience without love? A duty. Only a duty.

I think that we have all acted in one of these virtues without love. An example of this is when we do favors for people out of having a commitment to them instead of doing it out of love for them. Its not the same.

Challenge:

In all that we do, let us do it with love.
